The sight of her when she first emerges on stage is utterly grotesque. It only becomes more so when contrasted with her beautiful and upbeat singing. The only thing more grotesque is how this was normalized and accepted by our society then and long after. To condemn her now would b e unfair as she was merely a product of her times. Rather it is American society itself that must be held accountable, for normalizing and institutionalizing racism.

Judy didn’t wanted to do this. She was abused by MGM and her mother who put her in multiple substances and forced her to starve herself during the filming of “The Wizard of Oz” (which is another event itself everyone including the Toto dog were injured). Judy was used and abused by the industry until she died by an overdose from the drugs she got addicted to while she was forced to take during/even before the filming of “The Wizard of Oz”.
